Small Farmers
This coffee comes from Weithaga Factory, one of five factories that make up the New Weithaga Cooperative Society. The society also includes Kianderi, Gakarara, Kahindu, and Koimbi factories, and plays an important role in supporting coffee farming families across Murang’a County. The cooperative provides members with market access, agronomic guidance, and technical support to ensure high yields and consistent cup quality. The cooperative also plays a social role in the local community, supporting farmers not only through agronomy but also with resources and knowledge for more sustainable livelihoods.

Harvest and Processing
The flowering period occurs between February and March, with the main harvest running from October to December. Coffee is typically shipped between March and April. Farmers cultivate mainly SL 28, SL 34, and Ruiru 11, processed through the fully washed method. Each harvest, cherries are delivered to the factory by smallholder members and carefully hand-sorted before pulping. The parchment is fermented overnight, washed, and then graded into P1, P2, P3, P lights, and pods. Finally, the coffee is dried on raised African beds for 8–14 days, depending on weather conditions, ensuring slow, even drying for optimal quality. Annual production averages 1.3 million kilograms of cherry delivered by around 1,000 active smallholder farmers.

About the Variety
SL28 was bred by Scott Laboratories in 1931 from the Tanganyika D.R. variety. It has become very popular across Kenya and is recognized as a variety with exceptional cup quality. It has broad leaves with copper tips and large beans. SL 34 is a French Mission mutation that originated on the Loresho Estate in Kabete. SL34 has broad leaves with bronze tips. It is grown throughout Kenya. SL34 is prized for its high productivity across various climates and wide altitude ranges. It is said to be resistant to drought and heavy rains.
Kenyan Process
The cherries are first pulped to remove the beans, then fermented, washed—sometimes in multiple cycles—and soaked in water. The bean is then dried and rested on specially constructed raised beds.
